Imagine if you totaled up the amount of time you were on your phone throughout the day whether it was to check your email, make a call, send a text, or just to peruse social media or other websites. It’s amazing how much we’ve all become attached to this small device that can have such a big effect on our lives. Maybe it’s time we disconnect a bit, keep our phones in our pockets more often, and let our eyes go back to viewing what’s around us instead of what’s on our screens. The following are five of the reasons you might find it beneficial to put the phone down more often.

Your phone touches a lot of surfaces throughout the day not to mention your hands do as well before you touch your phone. The dirt and bacteria on your phone could transfer to your skin resulting in problems such as irritation and acne. When you take preventative measures in addition to keeping your phone clean, it can help reduce the chances of skin issues.

Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who was on their phone? It’s frustrating, to say the least, especially if you get through a few sentences before you realize they probably didn’t hear a word you said. Putting the phone down when you’re talking to people can help you to improve your relationships and connections with others as they can feel like you’re really listening to what they’re saying without being distracted.

Not only can the constant barrage of texts, calls, emails, and notifications cause stress, but conversations you’re having and things you’re seeing and reading could make you feel that way as well. As you know, stress isn’t good for your body at all. There’s no guarantee you’re going to have less stress in your life, of course, but putting down the phone could certainly possibly help.

You Could Strain Your Body
Straining your eyes, carpal tunnel, and straining your neck from looking down at the screen are just three of the problems that might come from being on your phone too often. Giving your phone a break can be giving your body a break as well.

There’s a Whole World Around You
If you’ve ever missed something wonderful because you were looking at your phone, you’re not alone. Many of us have been there, but using the phone less could be a way to improve our chances that it won’t happen again. Whether it’s missing out on beautiful scenery or noticing an awesome person near you because you were too distracted to meet their gaze, putting the phone to the side can allow you to be more aware of the world going on around you.

We need our cell phones nowadays, but that doesn’t mean we have to be on them all the time. Leaving them to the side could—in a way—help us simplify our life a bit, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.
