Is Your City Giving You Wrinkles?

Woman looking in the mirror.

There’s no doubt that what your skin goes through now will have a big impact on how it looks and feels in the future. Studies predict which cities across the United States may be more at risk for premature aging and skin damage decades in the future – to 2040 to be exact. Philadelphia landed the undesirable number one spot as the one predicted to be the most wrinkle-prone with San Jose grabbing the last spot for the least wrinkle-prone. So let’s say you live in a wrinkle-prone city, or maybe you don’t, but you’re still worried about the effect your lifestyle and environment could have on your skin, what are you supposed to do? The following are some ways that you can help decrease your chances of wrinkles and premature aging.

Stay Away From Cigarettes
Chances are you’ve heard by now that smoking isn’t good for your skin, but neither is being around secondhand smoke. There are so many options out there that could help you quit smoking, but even if you’re a non-smoker and you’re around people who do smoke, it may be best to either step away from that area or – if they’re in your home and they light up a cigarette – ask them to take it outside.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating foods such as ones that are processed or that contain a substantial amount of sugar may contribute to wrinkles. You don’t have to do a complete overhaul of your diet overnight if you feel it might be too much, but little changes like cutting out foods and beverages such as alcohol, sugar, caffeine, and junk food and opting for healthier options that include water, fruits, veggies, and fish could make a big difference for your skin.

Stick to a Good Skin Routine
Developing a good skin routine is essential for helping you improve the look and feel of your skin. For example, you should use products that contain antioxidants, switch up moisturizers in between cold and warm seasons, always wash your face twice per day with a gentle cleanser, and wear sunscreen. Additionally, you’ll want to do a monthly skin check of your moles to look for anything that seems abnormal, and pay a visit to your dermatologist at least once a year so they can see how your skin is doing and give you advice on whether or not your routine is working for you according to your specific skin type.

Lastly, one of the best things you can do for your skin and for your body overall is to decrease your stress levels. There are so many different ways you can go about it, such as meditation, and while it’s not always easy to trim down the stress, it is possible and it will allow you to look and feel so much better on a daily basis.
