Collagen
Ah, what skin-firming list would be complete without a mention of collagen? Especially on collagen week, no less! Collagen is a type of triple-stranded, twisted protein that exists outside cells and holds them together, being particularly prominent in connective tissues and skin. Increasing the amount of collagen in your skin—both through internal consumption and external application of creams and serums—can help improve your skin’s ability to stretch and eliminate or at the very least minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, allowing your skin to tighten up to the taut, youthful skin you yearn for.

Collagen injections can also do this, and near-instantly at that, but they are temporary and only last for a few months, so the best long-term strategy is gradual application of collagen over time. If you do opt for collagen injections, talk to your dermatologist first.

Moisturize
This one should be fairly obvious and self-explanatory, so we won’t dwell on it too long, but do be sure to use a quality moisturizer that keeps your skin well-hydrated. Not only is dry, ashy skin unattractive and unhealthy, it’s also counterproductive when you’re trying to firm the skin up.

Retinol
Another skincare powerhouse ingredient, retinol is one of the many forms of vitamin A, and it has several necessary functions in the body, but on the surface of the skin specifically, it can boost your body’s natural synthesis of collagen (meaning that with retinol stimulating it, your body will make more collagen itself as long as you’re using the retinol), along with the many other benefits retinol imparts.

Exercise and Stretching
It might sound odd, but regular stretching and strength training targeted at the areas you want to firm up can be hugely beneficial. Strengthening the muscles underneath the loose skin often makes the skin attached to the muscles follow suit and tighten along with said muscles. Do low weight, high rep to avoid bulking up, and don’t be afraid of getting stronger muscles! Lean muscle won’t make you look like a bodybuilder, it will just give you better definition, which can pull your skin taut as a nice “side effect.”
